Choosing Your Tomorrow: Harnessing your power of choice in the face of adversity
Thursday February 20, 2025 10:20am - 11:20am MST
My message is about the power of choice in building resilience and finding joy while living through adversity. I share a powerful journey as the spouse of an RCMP police officer, who faced the loss of my first husband who was killed in the line of duty during my maternity leave with our 8-month-old, and who now supports my second husband as he deals with PTSD from his service, as well as a child who lives with OCD, and a breast cancer diagnosis at the age of 44 that lead to a double mastectomy last year. As a teacher turned RCMP leadership and mental health curriculum design specialist, I became a mental health champion and advocate. I share insights on overcoming traumatic grief, navigating mental health challenges within a family, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. I’m dedicated to fostering resilience, reducing stigma, and showing that joy can coexist with pain, emphasizing the power of choice in our decision making.

Dangerous Language Arts: Praxis to Support Safety in Risk-Taking
Thursday February 20, 2025 10:20am - 11:20am MST
Taking up controversy can be so engaging but becomes so much work when things slide off the rails! In our pluralistic, conflict-driven society, teachers must often hold space in our classrooms for challenging topics and examining multiple views. In the face of increasing unrest in our globalizing world, how can teachers create safety in which students can risk voicing ideas and exploring difficult topics without creating conflict? If critical, argumentative dynamics and writing are the focus, how can we strike a balance and create an environment without ideological blow-outs? In this follow-up session to the DLA Theory, we shift from introductions, intangible framing, and boundary establishment to practical hands-on pedagogical planning. I’ll offer a series of practical ways teachers can begin to or further implement the safety/ risk taking paradox and provide time and support for planning something “dangerous” for your own students. Bring a challenging text to work from OR draw from ideas and texts I’ll share to build a learning process or product that fits YOUR students, and encourages them to grow into practiced evaluators, communications, and push their comfort boundaries when they feel safe to do so. Holding space for this important work while feeling supported and confident with current research instead of on edge or at sea will bring you new confidence in building safe foundations from which to teach dangerously and allow your students to take new risks in their communication.

Writing that Stirs the Heart
Thursday February 20, 2025 10:20am - 11:20am MST
Participants will learn how to use creative writing in two important ways. First, as an introspective, self-care tool to mend, strengthen and restore joy to the writer’s heart. See how words can foster a renewed sense of peace, passion, and purpose. Secondly, how to craft stronger writing, tell captivating stories, and communicate powerfully to move the hearts of readers. Writing styles of focus include: free writing, memoir, poetry, and fiction.

Learning Objectives:
Literacy
Health and wellness
Cross curricular learning

Participants should come prepared to write alongside presenter and award-winning author and artist Alexis Marie Chute. She will teach participants how to approach any artistic endeavor with mindfulness and freedom.

The writing styles presented—free writing, memoir, poetry, and fiction—will be discussed for their potential for personal expression, self-discovery, reflection, and as vehicles to share experiences with others and tell meaningful stories. Chute will introduce each style and outline how-to’s to ensure a positive writing experience. She will share how she used writing in her own personal journey, her struggle with depression, and the loss of her son, Zachary—as well as the breakthroughs that she experienced.

Target audience:
This workshop is for those looking for personal breakthrough, those with a story to share, and individuals responsible for facilitating creative writing with others.

3 Learning Objectives:
Describe how creativity, and specifically writing, can help them and others express themselves in a healthy and healing way, including left brain and right brain processes, for example.
Define writing styles, genres, techniques, and methods of implementation that empower writers to craft their words for optimal impact on their readers, prompting understanding, allowing new perspectives and engagement.
Identify which writing exercises are best suited for desired outcomes with the language to facilitate these creative explorations, including exercises and resource lists to support the writing.

Additional info relevant that will assist the reviewing of program:
This program provides a way for educators to replenish their own reserves, while also learning and exploring with storytelling formats that they may not have tried before. The education on how to share personal stories is an invaluable skill that can encourage and inspire communities. It places current tools in individuals and groups hands so that they can better themselves and their communities.

Behavioral outcomes, learning outcomes, instructional outcomes, and performance outcomes.
The opportunity to slow down and take time for personal and professional reflection in a safe and nurturing space.
The ability to discuss the biology behind creativity as an outlet for personal self-care and healing.
Ability to discuss the cultural relevance for creativity as a barrier-breaking community outreach tool.
A working knowledge of multiple writing styles and their creative characteristics.
Ability to describe these writing styles and how each can be used for personal expression, discovery, reflection, and transformation.
First-hand understanding of the exercises from trying them.
The ability to lead others through the writing exercises.

A Flat Earth, Dinosaurs, and the Divine: Can Religion and Science get along?
Thursday February 20, 2025 10:20am - 11:20am MST
Secondary students often assume that Religion and Science are inextricably at odds. Even if they can’t articulate exactly why, it is often taken for granted that a person of faith cannot embrace the scientific method and vice versa. This talk dispels caricatures of faithful flat-earthers, delves into the complex relationship between science and religion, considers seminal figures like Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Darwin, and Georges Lamaitre, and gives a framework for understanding how science and religion are not mutually exclusive.

This session dispels perduring caricatures about science and religion, explores seminal thinkers in the field like Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Darwin, and Georges Lamaitre, and gives teachers of Religious Education a framework for understanding how the respective domains of science and religion are by no means mutually exclusive.

Scaffolding by Complexity to Reach all Learners
Thursday February 20, 2025 11:40am - 12:40pm MST
This session will explore unit planning based on increased complexity as a way to differentiate learning. Teachers plan units in a linear fashion but what if we taught concepts at a basic level and throughout the unit, increased the complexity? This way, all students could access the learning in their zone of proximal development. Complexity-based instruction can also be a strategy to address the impact of absences on student learning.

In this session, we will look at the concept of Complexity-Based Planning, analyze examples in various subjects and grade levels and have time to develop your own unit of planning and assessments.

How to Keep the Movers, Shakers, Doers, and Makers in the Academic Stream
Thursday February 20, 2025 11:40am - 12:40pm MST
Have you noticed something changing between early middle school and later secondary school grades? After years of observing the shift in classroom dynamics, I took intentional action to support learners who struggle to ‘sit still and get to work’. Many students struggle with the behaviors academic streaming implies and seemingly requires, but it doesn’t have to be like this: teachers can implement practices that create dynamic engagement and rely on, instead of fight against, those creative, boisterous, and enthusiastic energies! In this session, I’ll share strategies and project exemplars that have changed the classroom dynamics of my 20 and 30 –1 classes by working to support, instead of struggle with, the need students have to move, speak, and learn in ways that are not strictly or silently textual. I’ll share approaches and plans that showcase the benefits of energetic, dynamic learners through interactive, experiential, situation, and multimodal process and product forms. Walk away from this session with new ways to support learners who struggle with static coursework by prioritizing conversational, hands-on learning. Your students will begin to see their capabilities and learning superpowers: no longer ‘villains’ who just can’t sit still, but rather heroes of and in their own learning.

Recognizing Academic Skills for Trades Success
Thursday February 20, 2025 11:40am - 2:00pm MST
Skilled trades through apprenticeship pathways have long provided people with exceptional means to successful careers both ‘on the tools’ and beyond into management, entrepreneurship, and other exciting roles. These pathways require significant intellectual and mental capacity which is often overlooked. The demands of every trade in areas of numeracy and literacy cannot be overstated. Red Deer Polytechnic’s School of Trades and Technology is proposing an engaging and insightful look at the work being done to raise awareness and recognize the expectations both of industry and the post-secondary institutions that support them. The fundamental nature of work that Trades people do relies upon broad numeracy and literacy skills in every activity encountered. From measuring and estimating, to calculating and projecting; trades people employ diverse and complex skills in those traditionally academic areas. It is not good enough to be a journeyperson without having key working knowledge and applied competencies in mathematics and communication skills. Presentations will share deeper insights into daily applications and requirements necessary on job sites and workplaces across the Trades spectrum. Multiple presentation deliveries highlighting different areas by a variety of trades faculty will demonstrate how numeracy and literacy is essential across the board. As an added bonus, we will clearly demonstrate how these tried and tested learning applications can be used beyond those seeking a pathway in the skilled trades. The use of practical hands-on relevant learning activities is immensely powerful in engaging and inspiring learners of any persuasion. Cooking can teach physics, chemistry, and biology in practically every activity. Geometry and trigonometry are vital in all construction areas. Calculations of volume, flow, pressure, and capacity abound throughout Plumbing and Pipe related trades.Faculty from four program areas including Carpentry, Cooking, Electrical, and Welding have created highly informative and detailed presentations emphasizing and reinforcing critical rationales for the importance of academic skills, otherwise perceived as only for university driven learners, in the trades. These presentations will be enhanced with Alumni Success Stories speaking about how math, science, and other skills helped them transition from high school to successful careers in the trades. Industry Partners who hire graduates will discuss the skills they look for in apprentices and the importance of foundational education in high school to emphasize real-world applications of what students learn in school. Interdisciplinary Faculty speaking about trades integration into other subjects like physics, engineering, technology, education, and essential critical thinking areas so teachers can prepare students for trades careers by connecting curriculum subjects that mirror real-world problem-solving. Hands-on Learning and Technology in Trades (such as VR, AR, & simulations) showcasing how new tools are changing the way apprentices learn, making subjects more engaging for students such as our welding simulators. Workforce Development and Career Path speakers addressing workforce trends and how teachers can guide students toward stable, rewarding career paths. All these presentations align well with goals of building relationships and understanding the value of trades education for future success, both for the individual, and the community at large.

Thursday February 20, 2025 1:00pm - 2:00pm MST
Research shows that investing time in identifying and developing lagging prerequisite skills leads to better outcomes for new learning. This session will seek to answer
How do we identify priority outcomes and the prerequisite skills needed to master them?
What do we know about the development of knowledge and skills--looking at cognitive skills through the work of Bloom, Webb and Hess?
How do we assess student prerequisite skills before new learning?
Once we know what skills are lagging, how do we support students to develop them?
How do we scaffold learning to support prerequisite skill development?
At each stage, participants will be invited to develop ideas to use in their classroom practice.

Practicing Metissage for Compassion, Narrative Communication, & Community Building
Thursday February 20, 2025 1:00pm - 2:00pm MST
Connecting with Indigenous Ways of Knowing and offering rich experiences in support of TQS 5 can be intimidating, especially for non-Indigenous teachers. While we cannot have first-hand knowledge of the hardships and celebrations of our Indigenous peoples, we are privileged to have the opportunity to impact hearts and minds in the spirit of reconciliation and continue to pursue practical methods of reconcili-ACTION in our classrooms. I’ll share my experience of developing a research project and unit plan for my 30-1 students, and the widely applicable learning, growth, and gold that was generated through our practices of metissage, or collaborative storytelling and narrative weaving. Students can to learn to see themselves and one another in fresh, exciting, vulnerable, and deeply impactful ways as they share their own narrative strands and braid their stories with the stories of others while making choices for their own comfort and safety. The incredible transformation power I witnessed unfold with my class during my research has led me to continue practicing processes reflective of metissage, and has continued to support both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students in remarkable and exciting ways. If you struggle with supporting kids as they seek out and navigate peer, friend, classmate, and community connections, implementing practices of metissage (from major to minor approaches) will allow you to hold space and support new depths of inter- and intra-personal understandings with your students and your classroom community as a whole through this beautiful narrative practice.

Fractions are often perceived as one of the most complex concepts to understand and teach, largely due to teaching that focuses on procedures rather than conceptual understanding. Financial Wellness - it's more than just investments!
Thursday February 20, 2025 1:00pm - 2:00pm MST
Why is it crucial to prioritize our financial well-being? Being financially prepared is essential because it's not just about money; it's a fundamental aspect of overall wellness. Neglecting financial health can lead to stress and affect mental well-being, making it harder to navigate life's challenges.

For educators, who often prioritize the needs of others over their own, focusing on personal wellness, including financial wellness, is imperative. Studies show that 40% of financially unstable Canadians experience stress related to their finances. This stress permeates their work life, with 88% reporting frequent worries and 49% admitting it affects their job performance.

But what if there were simple tools that could alleviate this stress? This session aims to provide such tools, offering practical steps that can be implemented easily.

In this session, you will learn how to take charge of your financial wellness, including setting up emergency funds and saving for the future. We'll explore investment strategies, understanding market dynamics, and making informed decisions. Budgeting tips will address common dilemmas like balancing debt repayment with savings. Additionally, we'll delve into mitigating major financial risks, such as the escalating costs of long-term care and the financial impact of unexpected illnesses.

Being financially prepared isn't just about avoiding financial pitfalls; it's about building resilience and securing peace of mind in the face of life's uncertainties.

The Christ Event and the Religions of the World: A Catholic Perspective of World Religions and the Classroom
Thursday February 20, 2025 1:00pm - 2:00pm MST
Our pluriform society is home to an increasing array of view points and traditions—many of which are informed and sustained by religious conviction. Grasping the fundamentals of world religions is, arguably, paramount for citizens of the 21st century. Yet how can students be equipped for such a task?
The challenge also is particularly pressing for Catholic educators, whose faith tradition, especially since Vatican II, has sought to formulate a theology of World Religions. Moreover, the move to integrate World Religions further into the Religious Education Curriculum has created greater demand for such theological knowledge, language, and vision. This presentation seeks to provide the basic perspectives on how Catholicism views and engages other faith traditions in the 21st century--and proffers various models and analogies for how these views can be presented in the classroom.

Grades that Inform: Using Cognitive-Based Assessment vs. Traditional Grading
Thursday February 20, 2025 2:20pm - 3:20pm MST
What is it that we want a student’s grade to tell us? More importantly, what do want a breakdown of their grade to tell us? Too often, traditional grade categories tell us whether students are strong or struggle with unit exams or assignments, but tell us little about what cognitive skills and abilities they need in order to improve their learning.

This session will examine the advantages of cognitive-based grade categories, how it can improve assessment design, and give more detailed feedback to students on what cognitive skills they need to improve their learning. We will also examine examples of cognitive-based grading (including year plans, assessments and grade book setup) in multiple subject areas, and look at ways to adapt your current assessments so this is not more work for teachers.

The W.I.S.E Choice: A simple and effective formula for emotionally controlled decision making.
Thursday February 20, 2025 2:20pm - 3:20pm MST
In the face of adversity, it is common to feel engulfed by stress, anxiety, and overwhelming emotions. Learning to navigate and master these emotional challenges is pivotal in steering clear of decisions that can derail our lives.

Through the experience of losing his hand and almost his life, Levi teaches valuable strategies for approaching decision-making with clarity and intention, fostering a mindset crucial in shifting from being a victim to becoming an achiever and from following others to leading with confidence.

Attendees will leave the event understanding the following:

By mastering the art of managing our thoughts, we have the ability to steer our emotions towards making logical and sound judgments.

How to assess the cost-benefit dynamics: evaluating the trade-offs between our decisions and their ensuing consequences.

The necessity of research to comprehend the full scope of a situation before responding, as every narrative presents multiple sides for consideration.

Encouraging thoughtful reflection on how our decisions impact the lives of those we hold dear, fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy in our choices.

Recognizing that our errors and misjudgments are inherent in the human experience, vital for personal development when we can learn from them and move forward.

Why do bad things happen to good people? Approaches to the problem of evil in Religious Education
Thursday February 20, 2025 2:20pm - 3:20pm MST
In Oscar Wilde’s Importance of Being Earnest, we hear “The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what Fiction means.” Though a flippant remark about romance novels, the quip points us to a profound conundrum: how do we make sense of evil and the lack of justice in this world? Weighty queries such as these are among the most challenging posed by students and teachers can find themselves flat footed when asked to account for ruptures in the fabric of life. Designed for Religious Educators, this talk offers educators a variety of models and approaches supplied by the Bible as well as philosophers that can be employed in the classroom.

Building an Online Classroom Community through Podcasting
Thursday February 20, 2025 2:20pm - 3:20pm MST
Student-student relationships (SSRs) are fundamental in creating successful learning experiences. SSRs in the classroom directly impact students’ sense of belonging, understanding of course content, and motivation. Asynchronous online learning often happens independently with few low-level, low-stakes interactions between students. To counter this approach, I adopted a podcast model classroom in my asynchronous Social Studies 30-2 class to improve conditions and opportunities for students to connect with their peers. In this session, I will walk through the steps I took to launch my podcast classroom, the literature that supported the project, and the outcomes, in terms of measured academic achievement, student motivation, and perceptions of belonging.

Thursday February 20, 2025 2:20pm - 3:20pm MST
AI has emerged as a tool that school-aged children have embraced, and consequently, has become a headache for teachers everywhere. This workshop offers an open discussion forum to teach the pros and cons of AI while laughing about how we’ll all eventually be replaced by talking toasters. Most importantly, it also provides useful tools and advice on how to use AI as a creative tool for writing projects.

Thursday February 20, 2025 2:20pm - 3:20pm MST
Spark interest and engagement by using online simulations to model natural phenomena. Support learners in making sense of complex scientific concepts with visual models. Students develop a deeper sense of how a system works by interacting with variables and observing connections within systems. Best practices for teaching with Gizmos are modeled. Access to Gizmos for K-6 teachers has been provided by Alberta Education. Teachers are encouraged to bring a device.
